Johannesburg to Cape Town

This is the busiest air corridor in South Africa and one of the busiest in the world by frequency. That density is good news: there are departures from early morning to late evening most days, and when one airline raises fares the others usually have something comparable. The catch is that demand is intensely seasonal — the same seat that is unremarkable in June becomes scarce and expensive in the last two weeks of December.

Worth knowing

  • 01Midweek departures, particularly Tuesday and Wednesday, are consistently softer than Friday and Sunday, when the business and weekend-break traffic collide.
  • 02The first departure of the morning and the last of the evening are usually the cheapest slots of the day on this route.
  • 03December fares move earlier than people expect. If you are travelling between 15 December and 5 January, treat September as your deadline rather than November.
  • 04Cape Town International is close to the city, but the N2 into town backs up badly on weekday afternoons — budget more transfer time than the distance suggests.

Common questions

How long is the flight from Johannesburg to Cape Town?

Roughly 2 hours 10 minutes gate to gate on a nonstop service. Southbound flights are sometimes marginally quicker depending on winds.

When is the cheapest time to fly to Cape Town?

May through August. It is Cape Town's wet season, which suppresses leisure demand, so both flights and accommodation are at their softest. February is the best compromise if you want good weather without December pricing.

How far in advance should I book?

Six to eight weeks covers most of the year. For travel over the December holidays or Easter, book three to four months ahead.
