Victoria Falls

Time this by water level, not by weather

Almost every guide to Victoria Falls tells you to come in the dry season, which is only half right. The Falls are fed by the Zambezi, and the river peaks months after the rains that fill it. So the sunniest months and the most impressive Falls do not coincide — and choosing purely on weather can get you either a rock face with a trickle down it, or a wall of spray so dense you never actually see the water.

Best time to go

June and July — strong flow, clear views, dry weather. Which is also why they are the busiest

The year, season by season

Peak flow

February to May

The Zambezi at its fullest and the Falls at their most overwhelming — you hear them long before you see them. The trade-off is spray: viewpoints are frequently obscured, you will get thoroughly wet, and photography is difficult. White-water rafting largely closes.

The sweet spot

June to July

Flow is still strong but the spray has eased enough to see the whole face. Dry, cool and clear. This is the best combination of the year and the pricing reflects it.

Low water

August to October

The gorge and rock face are fully visible, rafting is at its best, and Devil's Pool on the Zambian side becomes swimmable. By October the Zambian side can be reduced to very little water. Hot, and building toward uncomfortable.

Rains

November to January

Afternoon storms, green landscape, fewest visitors and lowest prices. The Falls are still filling, so flow is moderate. A reasonable value window if you accept the weather.

Getting around

The town is small and walkable, and most lodges run transfers to the Falls entrance. You do not need a car unless you plan to explore further into Zimbabwe. Crossing to the Zambian side at Livingstone is a short trip but a genuine border crossing — build in time and check what your passport requires.

Worth knowing

  • 01Decide which side you want before booking flights. The Zimbabwean side has the broader panoramic views; the Zambian side gets you closer to the edge and has Devil's Pool. Many visitors do both, which means a border crossing.
  • 02Devil's Pool is only open in the low-water months, roughly August to December. If it is on your list, that decides your dates for you.
  • 03A rain jacket is genuinely useful between February and May — the spray falls like heavy rain across the viewpoints.
  • 04Entry requirements differ for Zimbabwe and Zambia, and a combined visa exists for some passports. Confirm current rules before booking, as they change.

Common questions

What is the best month to visit Victoria Falls?

June or July. Water flow is still strong, spray has reduced enough to see the Falls clearly, and the weather is dry and cool. Those months are correspondingly busy.

When can you swim in Devil's Pool?

Only during low water, roughly August to December. It is on the Zambian side at Livingstone and is closed when the river is running high.

Are the Falls disappointing in the dry season?

Less overwhelming, but not disappointing — you see the full rock face and the gorge, which is impossible at peak flow. By late October the Zambian side can be very reduced, so the Zimbabwean side is the safer choice then.
