Johannesburg to Victoria Falls
This is the one route on our list where you should time the trip by water level rather than weather. The Falls are fed by the Zambezi, which peaks months after the rains — so the spectacle and the sunshine do not arrive together, and picking the wrong month gets you either a trickle or a wall of spray you cannot see through.

Worth knowing
- 01Peak flow is roughly February to May. The Falls are at their most dramatic, but the spray is heavy enough that the view is often obscured and you will get soaked.
- 02August to October is low water. You see the rock face and the gorge clearly, and this is when swimming at Devil's Pool is possible — but the Zambian side can be reduced to very little.
- 03June and July are the usual compromise: strong flow, clear views, dry weather. Which is exactly why they are the busiest and priciest weeks.
- 04The Falls straddle Zimbabwe and Zambia. Which side you fly into affects visas and day-crossing logistics — check current requirements before booking.
