Johannesburg to Windhoek
The starting point for almost every Namibia self-drive itinerary, and a route where the flight is the small part of the planning. Namibia's peak is its dry winter, when game concentrates around waterholes and the roads are at their most reliable — which is also when vehicle hire, not the airfare, becomes the scarce resource.

Worth knowing
- 01Book the 4x4 before the flight if you are travelling between July and October. Suitable vehicles sell out earlier than seats do.
- 02Hosea Kutako is about 45 km outside Windhoek, so the airport transfer is a real leg of the journey rather than a formality.
- 03January to March is the wet season. It is green, quiet and cheap, but some gravel roads become difficult and game viewing is harder.
- 04Regional fares in Southern Africa move less predictably than domestic ones — there is no reliable last-minute drop, so booking early is the safer play.
